Expansion of a Berlin Institution: Fiona Bennett Hat Design
For more than 30 years, I have been handcrafting contemporary hats of the highest quality. My hat artistry represents Berlin culture and innovative design, and has helped shape the international millinery scene. After moving on from my company and the iconic store on Potsdamer Straße, I am now beginning a new chapter. Without a studio or inventory, but with even more creativity and vision.
Under the title “Fiona Bennett – The Legacy Project,” I am focusing on the themes of upcycling, sustainable consumption, and responsible design. With this new concept, I aim to preserve our planet’s resources while proving that beauty and luxury can go hand in hand. Through creative reuse and a conscious design approach, something new can emerge that is not only aesthetically refined but also ethically meaningful.
Under the umbrella of The Legacy Project, I plan to develop a collection of timeless, quality hats crafted from upcycled materials. My goal is to create pieces that carry the heritage of the past into the future. Many high-quality vintage felt hats remain unused and unnoticed, yet the felts from the 1950s to 1980s possess an exceptional quality that is rarely found today. To source these treasures, I intend to travel to flea markets across Germany to find vintage hats and connect with dealers. I also plan to visit hat and deadstock fabric warehouses in Germany and Italy — the global heart of textile craftsmanship. Together with my experienced team, I will restore, deconstruct, reshape, and redesign these vintage hats, transforming deadstock materials into stylish caps and hats. The result will be timeless, high-end one-of-a-kind pieces that carry the best of the past forward into the future.
To promote and share the art of traditional craftsmanship, I will also offer „Craft Your Crown“ Upcycling-Workshops. Participants will be introduced to the well-kept secrets of the millinery trade and will learn how to transform vintage hats into new creations. They will experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from making something with their own hands. These workshops not only result in unique, one-of-a-kind pieces but also foster an appreciation for material, quality, and sustainability. Designed for small groups, the workshops can be hosted in various locations and also serve as inspiring team-building experiences through creative collaboration.
Your support will make it possible to launch and realise “Fiona Bennett Hat Design – The Legacy Project.” Funds will be directly invested in restructuring the brand, equipping the new studio, and developing the first sustainable collection.
Specifically, contributions will be used for:
- Studio equipment and machinery: Acquiring essential tools for production, including a free-arm sewing machine, braid sewing machine, wooden hat blocks, hat steamers, cutting tools, and other necessary workshop equipment.
- Team support & transitional costs: Fair compensation for freelance collaborators during the development phase until the project becomes self-sustaining.
- Materials and research: Traveling to hat and deadstock fabric warehouses in Germany and Italy to source, evaluate, and acquire vintage hats and deadstock materials.
- Prototype and collection development: Creating new designs with my experienced team, including prototypes and test runs.
- Online presence & shop: Mainting and re-stocking my online shop.
- Promotion & communications: Showcasing the new line through photoshoots, events, and public relations efforts.
With your help, a Berlin institution can rise again sustainably, creating a studio that combines craftsmanship, creativity, and conscious responsibility.
Thank you for your time and your support!
